Much better than a bit of string, and about as light: Kryptonite Hardwire Cable Lock

Not sure which is right? Go u-lock. If you’re super afraid of your bike getting stolen, go for the chain lock, if you almost never need a lock and you don’t worry much about it then go for the cable lock. Pretty much decide whether you care more about weight (and $) or security, and that will let you know which one is right for you.
