Lincolnshire has a range of cycling facilities, comprising on and off road tracks. National Cycle Network Route 1 runs through the county and connects Lincoln to Boston (via a series of towns and villages) on largely off road routes.
The WaterRail Way is a traffic free, flat, route following an old railway line between Lincoln & Boston. Although some of the route is on road most of it is not. There are lovely sculptures and scenery along the route which is suitable for all ages. A range of distances is possible, especially if starting from Lincoln. Shorter rides to Washingborough and Branston, medium distance rides to Woodhall Spa, and the full trip to Boston for those wanting to push themselves.
To the west of Lincoln Sustrans route 64 connects the city with Nottinghamshire and some wonderful country lanes, eventually crossing the River Trent via the traffic free Fledborough viaduct. This route is completely off road and suitable for all abilities. A short 3.5 mile route takes you from central Lincoln to the village of Skellingthorpe (and its famous Daisy Maid ice cream parlour!)
Lincoln has it's own bike rental scheme which can be accessed via mobile phone. There are over 20 stations dotted around the city, including at locations at the start/end of routes.
Giant Bicycles run bicycle hire from their store in the cycle hub at Lincoln Central Station.
NCN 1 runs the length of the county, north to south, providing a range of route options and destinations from the flat fenlands in the south (watch out for the headwinds!) to the much more undulating terrain of the Lincolnshire Wolds to the north of the county. Lincolnshire is NOT totally flat and there really is something to tempt all cycling abilities.
Lincolnshire has some of the best country lanes in the UK, this is true for the entire county but starting from Lincoln, cyclists wishing to push themselves more can ride to Woodhall Spa for a day out.
Visit Lincoln provides downloadable maps for the Lincoln Cycle Network and suggests routes to cycling destinations.
