John Privett Hi Rob - it would have been the late 60s that I was at Park Junior School, opposite the Spanish City. The funfair (technically "The Pleasure Gardens" though nobody ever called it that - it was just, The Spanish City) was probably at its peak about then. Certainly when I visited in the 80s and 90s it seemed to be on something of a decline, and I believe the funfair shut down in 1998. Dire Straits is another story - I was fortunate enough to see them play in the Students Union at Durham where I was a student, just after Sultans of Swing hit the charts in 1978. The Students Union had booked them as a totally unknown band, and between being booked, and playing, they hit the big time!
