Rob Wormald Resting on your laurels Mike, or is there a more serious reason you’ve been off the bike for well over a week?

Mike Ashton More serious I’m afraid Rob. I’ve torn the ligaments in my left shoulder at work. I’m in an absolute world of pain even when I’m not moving it! Having to sleep sitting up in a chair because I can’t lie down. Doing physio & just resting up in the hope it will heal on its own. If not it’s a steroid injection into the AC joint which won’t be very pleasant Ugh!

Rob Wormald That’s terrible Mike and no quick solution. Not the sort of injury you expect from working in a hospital. So sorry for your pain and suffering

Mike Ashton Yeah Rob it sounds a strange injury for a hospital but in my line of work it’s always a possibility. I move the waste bags & some dozy domestic had put a bag full to the brim of wet J cloths & mop heads. It was a deadweight & we reckon it weighed between 25 & 30kgs. Maximum weight printed on the bag is 5kg! You just don’t expect that kind of weight when you’re hauling them out of the bin. The physio thinks I could be looking at 4-6 weeks if all goes well. Unfortunately at 61 my age won’t help at all.. I’m already fed up!

Andrew Ross Mike: apologies for the late response, but get well soon, torn ligaments are a real pain. I tore one in my right knee 4 years ago. It was like persistent toothache for weeks! And no pain killer touched it.

Mike Ashton Thanks Andrew 👍 Yeah the pain is horrendous & you’re right about no painkillers touching it. It’s even painful just sitting in a chair! I’ve a bad feeling this is going to be a long healing process ☹️

Rob Wormald Have you considered acupuncture Mike? When I broke my leg and damaged ligaments in a bike crash (motorist’s fault) a few years ago I found it did help with the pain

Mike Ashton Someone else mentioned that to me the other day. I’m seeing the physio tomorrow & I’ll mention it. I’ll try anything to feel more comfortable right about now!

Mike Ashton Thanks Mary 👍 Think this one is going to take some time to heal. I’m fed up already of being cooped up. I’m one of those people who’d prefer to be at work & out & about. Even though I only do a couple of short trips a day I’m really missing being on the bike ☹️

Craig Hughes Keep strong Mike, I've been there .It will get better. Can you not access a gym and ride an exercise bike??? I don't ride everyday due to shift patterns and family commitments but I'm like you always itching to get out on my bike.

Mike Ashton Don’t think I could do an exercise bike Craig. Silly things like getting up out of the chair causes quite a lot of pain. Even moving my head can cause pain! Maybe an idea for when it starts to heal a bit though 👍

Mike Ashton Tim I haven’t had a Raleigh bike. My last 2 have been Boardman with the current one being the ADV 8.9.

Craig Hughes Thanks for the continued high 5s Mike, hope your recovery is going well .Current weather is not nice to cycle in no roads were gritted on my commute yesterday so it was very dicey with lots of free wheeling so as not to end up departing my saddle. Each ride taking on average 5 minutes longer A relief to make it in one piece.

Mike Ashton You’re welcome Craig. The roads around here were the same & I’m glad I wasn’t having to commute. Take it easy out there! Things are improving but very slowly. The pain isn’t quite so bad but it’s still not great. I’ve got a sick note until next Friday but I’m thinking I may need another. At least I get full pay for up to 6 months. One of the benefits of working for the NHS 🙂
