Cycle facilities in Southend consist of on-road, off-road and shared routes. The seafront and Prittle Brook Greenway are the two main off road routes.
Local routes for new riders
The seafront route between Chalkwell beach and Shoebury East beach is very good for those new to cycling and for leisure, as the route is completely segregated from the traffic. It is approximately 6.1 miles (10 kilometres) in length and can be joined at any location along the route. There is one section as you go through the centre of Southend (City Beach) where the promenade is shared. Please take care through this section and give way to pedestrians. There are plenty of places along the route to stop for refreshments or even take a walk along the Pier. Another good route for cyclists is the Prittle Brook Greenway, which runs from the south entrance of Belfairs Park to Priory Park. This route follows the brook along a green route away from the highway, but does cross several roads. This route is ideal for children and novice cyclists. It takes approximately 45 minutes to cycle the whole route. Refreshments and toilets are available in both Belfairs Park and Priory Park.
